A historical perspective for Lutheridge/Lutherock. In 1947 the North Carolina Synod purchased 172 acres in Arden, NC for the Lutheridge site. In the summer of 1951 the first part of the dining hall and its kitchen (Lineberger Hall) was built for the anticipated 600 campers, leaders and visitors in the summer ahead. Six rustic cottages nestled in the woods (the Hillside Cabins). In 1952 Luther Lodge opened its doors; Lake Lewthorne and the pavilion were being readied as well as the Recreational Hall. In 1952 the Whisnant Chapel, situated on the highest elevation of 2,500 feet, was completed. In 1957 V.O. Sipe contributed 50 acres to ALC congregations in North Carolina for a bible camp which was the beginning of Lutherock. In 1964 Kohnjoy Inn was constructed at Lutheridge. During the mid 60’s the NoCarAlc Association was established to operate Lutherock; 355 additional acres were obtained and 15 additional acres were acquired in 1971. In 1984 the Rev. Mark Radloff was called as the first director of Lutherock. In 1988 Lutherock initiated the Outdoor Adventure Program, featuring backpacking, rock climbing, whitewater rafting and canoeing. In 1991 Lutheridge and Lutherock were merged into one ministry. In 1998 the Lutheridge+Lutherock Board of Trustees approved the Master Plan for future expansion of Lutheridge+Lutherock and to develop a new ministry site in the Southeast Synod. In 2006, The Challenge Campaign was launched to raise $3.5 million to fund acquisition of the new ministry site in the Southeast Synod. On March 14, 2007
Lutheridge+Lutherock Board of Trustees acquired 519 acres in Haralson County One of the finest ministries we provide to children and families in the Church is Christian outdoor ministries. Since the ministries of Lutheridge and Lutherock have served the Southeast for more than 50 years, our camps have provided settings where Christ's love has been shared, where faith has been nurtured and where lives of children and families have been strengthened in faith. Lutheridge+Lutherock now need our help to continue the vision of the founders and extend this ministry to include a new ministry site in the Southeast Synod. A special project has been undertaken across our synod to acquire this property – Lutheranch - that will serve people of all ages. In addition, this effort will also provide funding to complete needed improvements at both Lutheridge and Lutherock. From now until May 18th, you will learn more about this important effort, called Foundations For Faith - The Challenge, to expand Christian outdoor ministries and to open more doors for ministry in the future. We pray that your commitment to ministry will encourage you to become involved. We will be receiving commitments from the members of the congregation on May 18, 2008 during all services. There will be a special guest speaker from Lutheridge who will answer any questions and explain more about ‘The Challenge’. During that time, a pledge card will be handed to all present members. Please indicate your willingness to pledge at this time. There is a chart on the pledge sheet which can help you determine what you can budget during the next three years. If you cannot pledge for any reason, please indicate as well. We look forward to your joining us in supporting The Challenge campaign. Whatever you can give will be appreciated. We hope that many more children youth, families and adults will participate in programs and retreats at Lutheridge and Lutherock and soon, at Lutheranch in northwest Georgia, as a result of this campaign. The website for Lutheridge is at http://www.llmi.net/4/. Please feel free to visit and learn more about the various programs available! |
